From prince to pioneer: 온조 (Onjo) and 비류 (Biryu), the founders of 백제(Baekje)
온조 (Onjo) and 비류 (Biryu), born in the late 1st century BC, were the legendary founders of 백제 (Baekje), one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Their story is recorded in ancient Korean texts such as the 삼국사기 (Samguk Sagi) and 삼국유사 (Samguk Yusa).
Historical records describe the brothers' journey from 고구려 (Goguryeo) to the Han River basin, where Onjo established the kingdom of 백제(Baekje). The choice of location near the Han River was crucial for Baekje's development as a maritime power and cultural hub.
