From monk to military hero: 김윤후 (Kim Yun-hu), the twice-defeater of the Mongol horde
김윤후 (Kim Yun-hu), active in the 13th century, was a monk and a military leader during the Mongol invasions of Korea. His victories are recorded in historical texts such as the 고려사 (Goryeosa, History of Goryeo).
Historical records highlight Kim's successful defense of 처인성 (Cheoninseong Fortress) against the Mongols in 1232, where he killed the Mongol general 살리타이 (salitai). In 1253, he led another successful defense at 청주산성 (Chungju Fortress), preventing the Mongol's fifth invasion and defended the castle for 70 days.
